Abstract

Purpose

Information seeking for child-rearing is an increasingly popular topic in the medical and social science literature, though a theoretical framework in which to understand this phenomenon is still missing. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors present results from a qualitative research in which data were obtained from 21 interviews and the personal experience of one of the authors. Participants were all mothers supportive of attachment parenting, a parenting style inspired by attachment theory which advocates making parenting decisions on a strong basis of information. They were recruited in several Spanish autonomous communities and interviewed between April and July 2015.

Findings

Results were analyzed using grounded theory and allowed to define five major themes: becoming a mother implies a new perception of oneself in which it is common to feel more in need for information; the need to search for information originates in situations of “conflict” or crisis, or as a consequence of conflicting information; information is judged and weighed on the basis of affect and perceptions; scientific and experiential knowledge are valued as complementary; and finally, information seeking appears as one activity of identity work.

Originality/value

Placing conflict, instead of uncertainty, at the beginning of the search process allows to emphasize the role of information seeking in mediating relationships and interactions at a societal level. From this point of view, the authors understand that LIS should pay more attention to information seeking as an important factor in social change.

Browsing rooms are those alluring spaces in the college or university library where the reader may shut out the flood and clamor of information. Here the imagination and personal interests of the reader are nurtured. Today's browsing rooms are vestiges of the 1920s and 1930s, developed in an era when academic libraries vigorously promoted recreational reading interests of students. As repositories of works chosen from the main collection for their ability to uplift, relax, and stimulate the student reader, the browsing collection in the college library of the 1930s was itself the embodiment of readers' advisory, that Cadillac of public library services.

Abstract

Sensemaking is an integral element of human cognition. It is the activity whereby we find answers to questions that arise from experience. It is at the core of collaborative management research as researchers and practitioners work together to build a shared understanding of organizational phenomena and take action based on that understanding, thereby generating actionable knowledge. However, mutual understanding is a complex process which requires a great deal of effort by both researchers and practitioners. While research has described in great detail the consequences of collaborative research endeavors, the challenge of creating a shared sensemaking conducive to these results has been left partially explored. The chapter examines the nature of sensemaking in collaborative management research. A comprehensive framework is proposed and then utilized to examine a collaborative management research effort carried out with an Italian social cooperative.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to understand how teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching (MKT) is developed during a lesson study regarded as a professional development process that places particular emphasis on teachers' knowledge of tasks, representations and students' learning.

Design/methodology/approach

This study is based on the networking of two theories, namely the Interconnected Model of Teacher Professional Growth (IMTPG) and MKT. The methodology is qualitative and interpretative. The participants are three primary school teachers and team members involved in a lesson study. Data collection was conducted by means of participant observation, with audio recordings of the sessions and a final individual interview.

Findings

The participant teachers developed their knowledge of tasks and representations, which are essential elements of content and teaching knowledge, as well as knowledge of the curriculum, content and students. Additionally, they developed specialized knowledge of mathematics, the meaning of fraction as a measure and its representation on the number line. This development arose from activities conducted in the Domain of Practice, in many cases prompted by the External Domain, and was particularly important when these activities gave rise to unforeseen consequences. Connections among the various domains were established through enactment and reflection processes.

Originality/value

The study shows how the networking of two different theories, in this case the IMTPG and MKT, may enhance further understanding of educational phenomena. This networking involved the coordination of these two theories, which were superimposed in the Group Domain.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify intercultural competencies in community instructors who serve in CONAFE in Chiapas, México.

Design/methodology/approach

The study applied a mixed methods method, based on an ethnographic design with a naturalistic approach. The quantitative instrument was applied to 119 community instructors; from these participants, four interviews were conducted with a sample of case-type participants, and four cases are presented.

Findings

The results show differences between community instructors who demonstrate intercultural skills and those who require developing them. It is concluded that teachers should receive training that strengthens their intercultural competences to enable indigenous children to take advantage of the knowledge they acquire in their community and the pedagogical advantage offered by the use of their mother tongue in the teaching–learning process.

Originality/value

This educational research about intercultural competences in the field of indigenous education, community education and intercultural education provides significant learning that advances the understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity.

Abstract

The hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer developed on a porous wall with heat transfer and various angles of transpiration are analyzed numerically with the proper boundary conditions. The wall functions of the viscous and turbulent sub‐layers for velocity and temperature are modified to allow for the effect of the angle of injection and suction through the porous wall. The finite difference method based on a control volume approach is used for solving the time averaged Navier‐Stokes equations for incompressible flow in conjunction with the standard k‐ε turbulence model equations. A non‐uniform staggered grid arrangement is used. The parameters studied include the suction and injection velocity (Vw) and the angle (α) of the injection and suction. The present numerical results of the normal injection and suction are compared with a known experimental data and a good agreement is obtained. The numerical results also indicate that the characteristics of the turbulent boundary layer such as local friction coefficient and thermal boundary layer thickness are substantially influenced by the velocity and the angle of transpiration.

Abstract

Purpose

Consumers with Down syndrome are present in all countries, but there has been little marketing research examining their consumption experiences. The purpose of this exploratory investigation is the analysis of the consumption meanings and practices of Down syndrome adults from their own point of view and from their families’ perspectives.

Design/methodology/approach

Data was drawn from 44 narratives interviews that included families'stories, description of album photos and projective techniques.

Findings

The research shows from the families’ perspectives how barriers to consumption prevent Down syndrome adults from becoming agentic consumers. The findings reveal the “labels” associated with the vulnerability of people with Down syndrome and their families in their market experiences.

Research limitations/implications

Research is limited to a single country and location and is focused on a specific group of overlooked consumers. We encourage the expansion of the research to a wider group and different locations.

Practical implications

The research identifies barriers to social inclusion that can support public policy and marketing manangement that contribute to a more humanistic marketing.

Originality/value

The research presents narratives of adults with Down syndrome, their mothers and siblings. The findings contribute to a comprehension about the welfare of this traditionally neglected, vulnerable group of consumers, which is useful for consumers, Down syndrome people and their families, marketing managers and public policymakers.
